Have you ever used a new product on your face only to realize that the product would work way better if it was refrigerated? Yea, neither have I. In fact, that’s the last thing that I want taking up counter space in my bathroom. I already have enough shit that I can’t keep properly contained on my half of our bathroom counter.
But, until recently, skincare refrigerators have been a closely-kept beauty secret of the pros. However, beauty gurus, makeup bloggers, and skincare enthusiasts are now buying beauty fridges and making them a daily part of their skincare regime.
So what is a makeup refrigerator, anyway?
Just like it sounds, a makeup refrigerator is a tiny version of the one in your kitchen, with the sole purpose of keeping makeup and other skincare products cool.
Large retailers like Macy’s, Nordstrom, and Urban Outfitters all offer beauty refrigerators designed for storing beauty products for around $50.
Do beauty products need to be refrigerated?
On Friday, Twitter user Safiya Nygaard tweeted that she had just bought a skincare fridge and her followers debated whether or not the purchase was considered “extra”.
It turns out that several of her fans already had their own skincare refrigerators, while some were clueless about their existence.
But, according to several dermatologists, the benefits to keeping your oils and lotions refrigerated are pretty slim, if any at all.
However, there are a few skincare products that actually benefit from refrigeration. According to New York’s too cosmetic dermatologist, Debra Jaliman, M.D., certain eye creams and gels produce better results when refrigerated. For example, applying chilled eye cream constricts with blood vessels and reduces under-eye swelling.
While there are certainly a few benefits to refrigerating your beauty products, I won’t be lining up to purchase one anytime soon.
